ExpoShort: A paper battery is a flexible, ultra-thin energy storage and production device formed by combining carbon nano-tube s with a conventional sheet of cellulose-based paper. A paper battery acts as both a high-energy battery and super-capacitor , combining two components that are separate in traditional electronics . This combination allows the battery to provide both long-term, steady power production and bursts of energy. Non-toxic, flexible paper batteries have the potential to power the next generation of electronics, medical devices and hybrid vehicles, allowing for radical new designs and medical technologies.
It was developed in the year 2007 by a research team conducted by Dr. Robert Linhardt; Dr.Omkaram Nalamasu and Dr.Pulickel Ajayan. In December 2009, Yi Cui and his research team successfully invented the original working prototype at Stanford University that provides 1.5 V as its terminal voltage
How it is better than Ordinary Electro-Chemical battery:
Limited life time:
Ordinary batteries can’t be recharged like secondary battery as they irreversibly convert chemical energy into electrical energy. Secondary batteries are rechargeable but are costlier as compared to primary ones. Though these problems can be solved by using paper battery.
Ordinary batteries release toxic material which are harmful for our environment and are also non-decomposable . But, paper batteries can be decomposed very easily without releasing any harmful substance for the environment.
The material used inside battery is very poisonous if swallowed or if comes with contact with any metal it can cause exothermic reaction. But there are non-toxic components inside paper battery.
Advantages of Paper Battery:
- Paper battery can be used as both super capacitor and battery.
- Paper batteries are very flexible, ultrathin, nontoxic and biodegradable battery
- Long life.
- Provides a steady power.
- Can be available in different shapes and sizes.
- They offer high energy efficiency.
- Paper Batteries are low-cost and can be easily disposed.
- They can be used to produce 1.5V energy and also paper batteries are rechargeable.
